ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Welcome to the Department of Physics, JNTUH College of Engineering web pages. This website is designed to give you an introduction to the faculty and to our undergraduate (B. Tech.) and postgraduate (M. Sc. PHYSICS with the specialization Fiber Optics and Communication) courses and our research activities. The Department of Physics was formed part of the JNTUH College of Engineering, Hyderabad ever since the College was established as Nagarjunasagar Engineering College in 1965 at Masab Tank, Hyderabad, when the College was under the administrative control of the Department of Technical Education and was affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad.  By an act No 16 of 1972 called the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Act, 1972 facilitated for the establishment of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University on 2nd October 1972, the College became one of the constituent college of the University and was renamed as JNTU College of Engineering, Hyderabad. The College was shifted to a hundred acre site at Kukatpally, on Bombay Highway in1984. In 2008, after the University was divided into four separate entities by the Ordinance of the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh, the JNTU College of Engineering, Hyderabad was renamed as JNTUH College of Engineering, Hyderabad and retained as a constituent College of JNT University Hyderabad.

Since its inception The Department of Physics comprises of outstanding senior academicians who have made significant contribution in the field of science education. With enviable academic and scientific track records, the Department’s faculty comprises of experts from various fields and branches of Physics. The Department of Physics is actively participating to meet the requirements of engineering students by revising the syllabi from time to time regularly. The Department of Physics since the inception of the Nagarjuna Sagar Engineering College has been supporting the various engineering disciplines by providing the courses of applied Physics / Engineering Physics for Engineers. The Department of Physics also had extended their support in handling the subject “Material Science” offered by EEE and CSE Departments at 2nd and 3rd year level of Engineering course respectively for several years earlier.

The Department of Physics started a three year M. Sc. (Tech) Physics programme with a specialization of “Fiber Optics & Optical Communication” in the academic year 1990-91. This Post Graduate course later converted to a two year M. Sc. Physics programme with a specialization of “Electronics & Computers” in the year 1999, keeping in view of growing demand in the field of Information Technology. Later taking into account the prominent role played by Fiber Optics in Telecommunications and other research fields, the Department of Physics reoriented to a two year M. Sc. PHYSICS course with a specialization of “Fiber Optics & Communication” from the year 2002 onwards.

The activities of the Department are supported mainly by the recurring budgetary allocation from the College Development funds of the College since beginning. For the development of the Department, specific grants from various funding agencies like UGC, MHRD, AICTE, DST, and CSIR are also sought from time to time and several academic activities had been taken up in the Department. The Department has procured modern and sophisticated equipment worth Lakhs from the research and development grants received from various sources.  The Department as part of the College celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1990.

We pride ourselves as one of the internationally recognized premier departments for the quality of teaching and research. The Department of Physics started in 1965 and runs as one of the most popular physics departments among other institutes across the country. The department has an international research reputation, with many research contacts across the globe.

The Department of Physics JNTUH College of Engineering is one of the best places in the country for research and education in physics. The Department has been the source of innovation in physics education for decades.  The Physics Department strives to be at the forefront of many areas where new physics can be found.   Many of our alumni have won the best teacher awards since the inception of the Department, which reflects the outstanding quality of students we attract and the superb education they receive. Our research is organized into several areas, pushing back the frontiers of human understanding of space and time and of matter and energy in all its forms, from the subatomic to the cosmological and from the elementary to the complex. The courses are designed and taught by our internationally reputed academics carrying out cutting-edge physics research. Many optional modules are introduced from those research topics and the projects that were offered all the students involve them working alongside academics in the Department’s advanced research laboratories. All of our courses have been appreciated by many professional bodies for physicists in the world.
